Samsung has finally released its latest smartwatches in the Gear S3 edition in India. The Samsung Gear S3 is a successor to the Gear S2 smartwatch. The Gear S3 is launched in two variants in India- Frontier and Classic. The smartwatch will be made available for purchase at Samsung retail channels across the country from January 18. The smartwatch is priced at Rs 28,500.
The Samsung Gear S3 smartwatch was first launched in Berlin at IFA 2016. The smartwatch runs on Samsung’s own Tizen OS and not Android Wear by Google. The Gear S3 Frontier model features a rugged design language with MIL-STD-810G rating, whereas the Classic model comes with the more refined look. The cases of both models are made out of high-end watch grade 316L steel. The smartwatch features rotating bezels which allow users to snooze alarms or pick up the calls without touching the display.
The Gear S3 Frontier model offers a cellular radio chip which could get connected to high-speed 4G networks. With the mobile network connectivity, the watch can directly make calls or connect to the internet. To use these features on any other smartwatch, the users are required to tether such functions from their smartphones. This is the unique feature which is missing in market leader, Apple’s latest smartwatches.
“With the Gear S3, we continue to build on our wearables heritage of offering diverse choices to enhance consumers’ unique lifestyles,” said Manu Sharma, Vice President, Mobile Business, Samsung India.
The Samsung Gear S3 smartwatch flaunts a 1.3-inch (360×360 pixels) Super AMOLED always-on display with Gorilla Glass SR+ protection. The device is powered by a 1GHz dual-core processor. It comes with IP68 certifications for dust and water resistance, built-in speaker, and built-in GPS as well. The Frontier model of Gear S3 features LTE support, whereas the Classic model lacks this feature. Besides this, the smartwatches include connectivity options like Bluetooth, NFC/MST, and Wi-Fi. The device is powered by a 380mAh battery.
Samsung has recently rolled out its Samsung Gear S app for iOS which provides support to its Gear S2 and Gear S3 smartwatches on iOS mobiles.
