OnePlus 5 review: Making the leap from good to great
28th June, 2017

Before we go any further, a few notes: We're reviewing the top-of-the-line OnePlus 5, with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage (available only in black). This model is still highly reasonable for the specs you get. Fortunately, there's also a version with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage (available only in gray) as well and should still give every other flagship a run for its money. Both versions of the phone are identical otherwise, from the Snapdragon 835 chipsets they share to their sealed, 3,300mAh batteries. For better or worse, though, OnePlus still prefers giving its phones two nano sim slots instead of a spot for a SIM and a microSD card.

This year, we're working with another 5.5-inch AMOLED panel running at 1080p, with a traditional 16:9 aspect ratio and no curves. (It is, however, covered in a slightly curved plate of Gorilla Glass 5 that's already getting dinged up.)It might not be quite as crisp as the Galaxy S8's screen but the pixel density on this 5.5-inch, 1080p screen works out to 401 PPI. it's built atop a clean version of Android 7.1.1 Nougat and loaded with a host of helpful tweaks and options to give power users more control.Dual cameras in smartphones may have seemed like a flash in the pan at first, but it's clear they're not going anywhere except in our pockets. Most of the time you'll be using the 16-megapixel main camera

  • Excellent performance
  • Strong battery life
  • Awesome camera
  • Design is starting to feel generic
  • Still no expandable memory
  • Dash charging is a closed standard

Oneplus Five review -Dual-lens camera and top dog for performance
28th June, 2017

A great camera, phenomenal performance, and a premium design combine to make this a fantastic buy for anyone looking for a more affordable flagship phone. OnePlus has produced two versions of the OnePlus 5, with the base model coming with 64GB of internal storage and 6GB of RAM, the higher-end version, with 128GB of storage and 8GB of RAM.The new handset has a more rounded design than previous iterations, which means it sits comfortably in your palm. It’s also the thinnest phone yet from OnePlus at 7.25mm – almost as thin as the iPhone 7, which is 7.1mm, There’s only one speaker driver, and that sits at the bottom of the phone, next to the USB-C port and 3.5mm headphone jack.

Yes, despite all the rumors OnePlus has decided to retain the legacy headphone technology for the OnePlus 5. That means you get the same 5.5-inch Full HD AMOLED display from the OnePlus 3T, and it is a little hard not to be disappointed by that considering the increase in the price of the handset this year.

  • Fantastic camera
  • Great performance
  • More price than previous ones

OnePlus 5 review:The wunderkind gets more wonderful
29th June, 2017

The OnePlus 5 hopped aboard the dual-camera trend and has two rear shooters. Unlike other phones that have two cameras for wide-angle or monochrome purposes, the phone has a standard 16-megapixel shooter and a secondary 20-megapixel telephoto lens. This enables it to take "bokeh" images that have a shallow depth of field and blurred backgrounds (as if you took the photo with a DSLR camera). The OnePlus 5 carries over the fingerprint sensor that sits below the screen, as well as the headphone jack and the toggle button on the edge that changes vibration and silence levels. The display, which is now fortified with Gorilla Glass 5 to make it tougher, is vibrant and sharp, but it's the same 1,080p resolution. The OnePlus 5 is lightning fast. I tested the 128GB model with 8GB of RAM (remember, there's also a 64GB variant with 6GB of RAM).

The latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset blazed through our benchmark tests, even beating out the Galaxy S8, Pixel, and LG G6.The phone's non-removable battery has a slightly lower capacity than before (down from 3,400 to 3,300mAh). But the battery actually lasted about an hour longer in our lab tests for battery usage than the 3T, clocking in an excellent 17 hours, 50 minutes on average It runs a relatively clean version of Android 7.1.1 Nougat that's easy to use and navigate, too. (It'll also get the Android O update eventually.

  • Affordable and super fast, with an 18-hour battery
  • Its camera takes great portraits and low-light shots
  • It costs more than any previous model
  • Its design isn't anything special
  • It doesn’t have expandable storage

Doing the Math - OnePlus five Review
20th June, 2017

The design leaves no doubt where its inspiration came from, but important (if subtle) differences lead to improved handling when compared to the iPhone 7 Plus. The aluminum body looks and feels worthy of a flagship, for a substantially lower price. The lack of ingress protections is a concern though. The display is as bright as Samsung's own AMOLED in manual mode, though it doesn't get a boost in Auto and that leaves it behind. Sunlight legibility is great, though we've seen other AMOLED panels do better. Color rendition is very accurate in both as RGB and DCI-P3 modes, the default mode is punchier with bluish whites. QHD resolution would have been nice, though.

Battery life is very good: standby and voice call endurance aren't spectacular (as is the case with most S835 phones), but the near 19 hours of video playback certainly are. 11 hours of web browsing over Wi-Fi is also a sound improvement over last year's model and quite competitive. The user interface is an awesome blend of stock Android and light but useful touches in all the right places. OnePlus has scrapped the in-house Music player, and it's only the Gallery that is a custom job - a good one, too.Videos shot in 4K on the main cam are superb - lots of detail, little noise, nice colors. 1080p/30fps mode is the only one that benefits from EIS, and the stabilization is very good at reducing camera shake. It's terrible at panning shots though - those turn out quite jerky. Additionally, 1080p/30fps videos are lacking in detail. 1080p/60fps is better, but there's no EIS in this mode. 4K from the tele cam is very good, 1080p/60fps is dismal while 1080p/30fps is better, but still no match for the iPhone 7 Plus'.

  • Powerful Hardware
  • 2.5D Gorilla Glass 5 display
  • Light software
  • No ingress protection
  • No microSD slot for expansion
  • No stereo speakers

The prior sensor supports aperture of f/2.6, while the later sports aperture of f/1.7. Up front, there will be a 16MP selfie shooter. The handset has power from a 3000mAh battery.
