The Chinese OEM, Xiaomi is reportedly working on its in-house chipset for a while. The new in-house chipset called as Pinecone is rumoured to be integrated into the upcoming Xiaomi Mi 5c smartphone. The new processor is likely to be unveiled sometime this month. Now, Xiaomi’s Pinecone processor appears on social networking site Weibo ahead of its rumoured launch. On Weibo, the official page of Pinecone has been created with minimal information such as the processor name and logo.

The Weibo page of Pinecone processor was spotted by Chinese news site Anzhou which claimed that the launch of Xiaomi Mi 5c is not far away. Xiaomi has been working on the Pinecone processor in partnership with the chipmaker firm, Leadcore. A few years ago, Xiaomi had released the Redmi 2A smartphone featuring a Leadcore processor and the company now appears to be all set to ship all devices with its own chipset.

As per several rumours, the company is expected to launch two models of its processor- the Pinecone 1 and the Pinecone 2. The Pinecone 1 will be an octa-core chipset with Cortex-A53 CPU, whereas the Pinecone 2 will comprise four Cortex-A73 cores and four Cortex-A53 cores. As of now, there is no detail about the GPU on the chip, but the chipset is likely to be built on the 10nm process.

As is the case with most electronic makers, Xiaomi has been sourcing the processors from Qualcomm and MediaTek till now; however, the in-house processor offering with its Pinecone chipset has put Xiaomi in the ranks of Samsung, Apple, and Huawei. As aforementioned, the Xiaomi Mi 5c will be the first smartphone to come with Pinecone processor which will be an affordable variant to the Xiaomi Mi 5. Alternatively, the Mi 5c smartphone is rumoured to feature a Snapdragon 625 processor in several reports.

If the previous leaks are to be believed, the Xiaomi Mi 5c smartphone will feature a 5.5-inch full-HD (1080×1920 pixels) display with 2.5D curved glass on top. It will have 3GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. On the camera front, it is tipped to offer a 12MP primary rear camera and an 8MP selfie snapper. It will run on MIUI 8 OS and will pack a 3200mAh battery. The Xiaomi Mi 5c was expected to be launched back in December last year, but that didn’t happen. Now, the smartphone is tipped to be launched sometime this month.
