OnePlus 3 vs Nexus 6P : the Battle of the Beasts

The OnePlus 3 has finally arrived, and it’s a zinger… One of the biggest contenders of the year for smartphone king… The Nexus 6P is also an admirable one with serious credentials on and off paper. Let’s see who wins in the Android battle between the OnePlus “flagship killer” and the Google’s formidable Huawei Nexus 6P!

OnePlus 3 Vs Nexus 6P

Design

OnePlus phones have always been attractive, but the OnePlus 3 is the most charismatic. It’s fairly svelte at just 7.4mm and weighs 158g. The front is design is shiny, black, and very inoffensive. There is a fingerprint scanner mounted & a front-facing camera on the upper part of the bezel. The back, however, appears much more like a HTC One M9.

The Nexus 6P is marginally slimmer at 7.3mm, with a weight of 178g which is a fair whack heavier than OnePlus 3. Thanks to the phone’s premium build that makes the Nexus 6P a metallic chassis.
The OnePlus 3 is only available in Graphite and Soft Gold variant. Meanwhile, the Nexus 6P is available in more colors like -Aluminum, Graphite, Frost, and Matte Gold. So which phone looks better? It’s tough to say, as both are premium, metallic, and hefty.

Honestly, it’s a tie if you’re choosing between these phones on the basis of the design.

Display

The OnePlus 3 has a 5.5-inch display with Full HD screen resolution, which is pretty large similar to the iPhone 6S Plus. The phone supports a pixel density of 401 PPI.

The Nexus 6P sports a 5.7-incher QHD panel with a gloriously high-resolution of 518 PPI. However, one of the drawbacks of dense displays is that they draw more power. So, the OnePlus 3’s Full HD screen will appears to be quite battery-friendly. Plus, the sheer size– 5.7-inch is enormous.

Finally, the OnePlus 3 uses an Optic AMOLED screen, whereas Nexus 6P uses a Super AMOLED panel. Being equipped with OLED panels both phones have improved power efficiency and truer blacks.

Hardware / Software

The OnePlus 3 runs Android 6.0.1 – skinned with custom-built Oxygen OS. It sports Qualcomm MSM8996 Snapdragon 820 which is a significant upgrade on the Snapdragon 810 & offers 64GB storage. But one cannot just rely on processors alone. Storage and memory also play an important part of the smartphone experience.

Nexus 6P on the other hand runs Android 6.0.1 and supports Qualcomm MSM8994 Snapdragon 810 quad-core processors with 32/64/128GB storage. That’s a good range of choice.
As far as the memory is concerned, the Nexus 6P features 3GB of RAM; meanwhile, Oneplus 3 touts 6GB of RAM, which is frankly ludicrous. Although, such memory is overkill for some but on the bright side, you could see it as future-proofing. After all, apps are becoming increasingly demanding in terms of memory usage.
Although both the phones sport fingerprint scanner, the OnePlus 3 has an extra perk: a hardware button that lets you quickly mute the phone. Again, neither of them offers a microSD slot, which might offend ardent fans of expandable memory.  Overall, the OnePlus 3 is simply superior in terms of performance. That’s a given. The processor cores are more rapid, the memory is more sizeable, and the GPU is more powerful. Sorry, Google!

Camera

The OnePlus 3 offers a 16-megapixel sensor with OIS. This reduces blur, and is fast becoming a must-have feature on flagship Smartphones. Although the Nexus 6P has digital stabilization, it is simply not as good. The Nexus 6P has a shaky history with camera performance. It offers a 12-megapixel sensor, autofocus, dual-tone flash, and large 1.55um pixels. The camera experience is great. Browse our list of Selfie Phones.

Battery

The OnePlus 3 uses a 3,000mAh battery, which is slightly smaller than its predecessor and much smaller than the Nexus 6P with 3,450mAh battery.
However, looking at all the aspects, the Nexus 6P is also a big battery mobile that has to power a higher display resolution and is therefore is less power efficient. OnePlus 3 on the other had uses a newer, less juice-hungry processor. you can check our big battery mobiles here.

Both phones also support fast-charging. The OnePlus 3 sports a feature called Dash Charge, which gives you 63% of charge in just 30 minutes. The Nexus 6P, meanwhile, uses the new USB-C connection (also available on the OnePlus 3) to charge at an increased rate of 15W – that’s 5V x 3A.

Price

Here’s where the OnePlus 3 has a clear advantage. OnePlus is one of the budget mobile phones that has always been ahead of the game when it comes to pricing. There is a £120 price difference, which is a major point in favour of the OnePlus 3. In fact, the phone is quite cheaper than pretty much any other major high-end phone on the market today.

Verdict

The OnePlus 3 is in line with the Nexus 6P in many ways considering the battery life and the designs. Even both the phones run clean versions of Android. However, OnePlus 3 has several advantages in such humble price segment. For casual users who just want a ruddy good phone, you’re probably better off picking up the newer, cheaper, and more powerful OnePlus 3.
